What's Really in Your Sunscreen?
Written by: Lupita Woo

With summer in full swing we are always concerned with sunscreen, SPFs and protecting our skin. But do we really know whats in those little bottles? Since the FDA doesn't regulate cosmetics like they do food or pharmaceuticals, some sunscreen may be more toxic and harmful than you think.

The most harmful sunscreens contain:

Oxybenzone- a hormone disruptor that absorbs straight into your skin

Vitamin A- may speed up the development of skin tumors and lesions

Higher SPF- not proven to be more effective and could cause more exposure to UV radiations

Fragrance- linked to allergies and other serious health problems

Parabens- hormone disruptor

How to Choose a Safe Sunscreen:
  • Look for titanium dioxide and zinc oxide based mineral sunscreens, which do not penetrate the skin and provide UVA protection
  • Choose non-nano products that don't have small particles that can absorb into the skin
  • Opt for sunscreens that are unscented and use essential oils as fragrance
  • Pick lotion based sunscreens that are water resistance
  • Obtain broad spectrum sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB rays

So now with all this useful knowledge, here are some brands that cover all these guidelines:

California Baby- formulated for sensitive skin and it contains SPF 18-30. This product is available at your local Target.
Seventh Generation Sunscreen- SPF 30- only one option available.
Aubrey Organics-SPF 26-45 available, unscented.
